8 comforting soup recipes

Looking for some cosy winter comfort food that’s gluten, dairy free and allergy-friendly?

Look no further, I have compiled a few of my favourite soup recipes that are guaranteed to warm the cockles of your heart ( and bones to it gets chilly here in the UK).

I have included a nutritious broth, a noodle soup, chunky soups, pureed soups and 2 lentil dhal recipes.

All of these recipes are gluten, dairy free and some are vegan. I will also include tips on how to make them yeast-free, deadly nightshade-free and soy-free along with where to buy certain ingredients.

And if you thought that I would just get together soup recipes without bread then think again! You can’t eat soup without bread, right?

I have included some links at the bottom to some great bakeries that you can order from, plus some fantastic recipes should you feel the need to get your Paul Hollywood game on too!

Grab a cuppa, and let’s begin!

The soup recipes

Bone broth

DAIRY FREE II GLUTEN FREE II NUT FREE II PALEO

This is such a healing and nourishing broth to boost your immune system, so it is great for the cold months when everyone has a cold or flu. Bone broth is made by simmering the bones for 12 hours or just simmering in a slow cooker.

I put mine together in the evening and let it cook overnight. I then freeze the broth in small containers and use it as a base for noodle soups, gravy, soups, and stews orsometimes I will drink it just as it is. Read more about the wonders of bone broth on your health here.

Chicken noodle soup

GLUTEN-FREE II DAIRY FREE II NUT FREE

Made using the bone broth recipe above. If you want to buy the stock instead, there are some great organic varieties in the supermarkets. This is such a comforting soup to eat, it’s also anti-inflammatory thanks to the ginger and garlic I used.

How can you not recover from a cold when you eat this soup? Once the broth has come to a boil, you simply add the noodles, cooked chicken and veggies then cook for less than 5 minutes. voila a lipsmackingley delicious healing meal made in a jiffy!

Thai inspired prawn Tom Yum soup

GLUTEN-FREE II DAIRY FREE II NUT FREE II SOY FREE

This is another gorgeous recipe, made using the bone broth above, or you could use a store-bought chicken, fish or vegetable stock. If your stock needs to be yeast and gluten-free, try marigold brand here, kallo brand here.

Or use my recipe for bone broth above. If you can’t eat soy, substitute the soy sauce for coconut aminos, if you are following a GF diet, use either liquid aminos or tamari instead. This soup doesn’t take that long to put together. I love these noodle soups in the winter. They are so nourishing and can be made in a matter of minutes.

Leek & potato soup

GLUTEN FREE II DAIRY FREE II VEGAN II SOY-FREE

A classic British soup, this is fantastic as it is, if you are not vegan, add some chopped crispy bacon on top also.

This recipe is a great base that you can adapt for many other soups. If you want to make a carrot and coriander soup add 500g carrots with all the vegetables add coriander at the end.

If you want a sweet potato and lentil soup, add 1 sweet potato and a large handful of orange lentils and simmer till cooked.

Soups can be batch cooked and frozen, which is what I do when I make soups.

Sweet potato, turmeric and carrot soup

GLUTEN-FREE II DAIRY FREE II VEGAN II SOY FREE II PALEO II NUT-FREE

I cannot begin to tell you how delicious this soup is!! It’s so velvety smooth with a comforting taste of sweet potatoes and cumin, the spices aren’t overpowering but warming to taste.

Using the base recipe above, I just added spices, turmeric, sweet potato and carrots, and finished with coriander, coconut milk and chilli flakes. Omit if you are following a nightshade-free or AIP diet.

I will also add some brown rice to the soup on those days I’m super hungry and maybe some more cooked veggies.

Spiced lentil, butternut squash and coconut soup.

VEGAN II GLUTEN FREE II SOY FREE II DAIRY FREE II NUT-FREE

Using similar ingredients in the above recipe, I added lemongrass, ginger, cumin ,and garam masala to give it some extra flavour. Topped it with a beautiful silky coriander and garlic oil.

Perfect for those days when you want some spice and comfort at the same time.

Add quinoa to the soup if you feel hungry. It then becomes like a stoupe, a cross between a stew and a soup with Asian flavours. YUM!

Sweet potato lentil dhal

VEGAN II GLUTEN FREE II SOY FREE II DAIRY FREE

Spicy and rich in flavour, this sweet potato and lentil curry is made with orange and yellow lentils. I love to cook this dish when I’m in the mood for something warm and savoury but oh-so comforting.

I have served this with pasta like a vegan Bolognese, which is really tasty, I have also added cooked chicken to the dhal on other occasions.

Serve it with pasta, in a jacket potato or simply just with rice. It’s so yummy, you decide.

Black lentil dhal

GLUTEN-FREE II VEGAN II DAIRY-FREE II SOY-FREE

This is lightly spiced. I used lots of ginger, garlic and onions to create a curry base with lots of depth. This is a perfect and nourishing meal to feed your family or a good recipe to batch cook and freeze.

Lentils are so cheap and with a few ingredients, you can create some magic.
