Notes on ingredients for Chai spice mix
Spices
I used ground cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, cloves, allspice, nutmeg, and green cardamom. I purchased my spices from a local Indian shop because they are much cheaper than the small jars available in supermarkets. If you’d like to enhance this chai spice mix, adding vanilla powder would be a delightful addition. I absolutely love vanilla chai! Buy powdered vanilla online, Vanilla powder is a fine powder made from dried, ground, and processed vanilla beans, offering a concentrated vanilla flavour.
How to use this homemade chai spice mix
The beauty of this easy chai spice mix (other than the fact that it smells SO freaking good) is that it’s really, really versatile.
Add a quarter of a teaspoon of chai spice mix to your tea.
Stir a few pinches of chai spice into your morning coffee and add creamer or milk.
Add half a teaspoon to some warmed milk and add a touch of honey or maple syrup.
I love adding a few pinches of chai spice mix to hot chocolate. I use coconut or oat milk and add a touch of maple syrup; it’s divine.
Add a couple of teaspoons of chai spice mix to baked goods. I love making a chai spice cake. Use the chai spice mix in the icing, too—it’s just so delicious I would then top with candied ginger for decoration. You can also add the chai spice to stewed apples, scones, cookies, or pancakes.
Try making your own chai spice granola. Use this recipe for my gluten-free granola. Add three teaspoons to the mixture and bake. Serve with coconut yoghurt and soft fruits like berries, mangoes, or plums.
NB: If adding the chai spice to drinks remember to strain it before you drink as it might be a little gritty.
