This healthy apple crumble will delight all the family, not just those with allergies or intolerances.

Notes on ingredients

Cinnamon for apple crumble

I love to use cinnamon with apples. You could also use ground cardamon, cloves, mixed spice or even pumpkin spice as an alternative.

Coconut sugar

Coconut sugar, also known as coconut palm sugar or coconut blossom sugar, is a natural sweetener derived from the sap of coconut palm flowers. Coconut sugar tastes a lot like brown sugar. It has a sweet, dark flavour with notes of toffee and caramel. Despite its name and origin, coconut sugar does not taste like coconut at all. It’s also been described as having a strong caramel taste.

So, if you enjoy the rich, deep flavours of brown sugar and caramel, you might enjoy the taste of coconut coconut sugar in most supermarkets. You could also use brown sugar for apple crumble instead. It will be sweeter, so add a little less than stated in the recipe.

Oats

I used rolled oats for this apple crumble recipe. Feel free to use jumbo oats instead. To make this a gluten-free apple crumble, ensure that you use certified gluten-free oats.

Almond flour for apple crumble

I bought almond flour from an online allergy-friendly health food store called Well Easy. See details at the bottom of the page. You could blend blanched almonds in a Nutri bullet instead.

Nuts

I used hazelnuts for this healthy apple crumble topping, but walnuts or pecans could also be used for the topping instead.

Honey

I used a little raw honey to sweeten the apples, but if you would like to make this a vegan apple crumble, use agave or coconut blossom syrup instead.

Apple crumble is delicious on its own or can be served with a variety of accompaniments. Some popular serving options include:

  • Classic Apple crumble with custard - make my dairy-free version. Get the recipe here.

  • Apple crumble with ice cream

  • Serve apple crumble with single cream. Try this one. Its not that great for whipping as it loses its structure and becomes quite loose, so not great for piping as it collapses.

  • Serve apple crumble with caramel sauce try my vegan salted caramel version, get the recipe here.

  • Serve apple crumble with whipped cream. My favourite dairy-free creams to use are either this one from Coconut Collaborative or this one from biona its a coconut-based whipped cream.
